We both acknowledged the fact that we had the best name ever. Sabrina. A name that is famous for so many reasons and one I’ve grown to love and hate. Meeting other Sabrina’s is like meeting others born the same day as me—rare but not too rare. I was excited about our immediate connection when she requested portraits. With our shared love for Sailor Moon and desire to be seen as ourselves in our proper form, I knew this would be an exciting pursuit that I was once again given.

Lately, most of my sessions have been requests for solo portraits. Some do it to update their profiles on social media, others for business purposes, and others to celebrate. For Sabrina, it was vital that she had a session to celebrate her birthday and was open to whatever suggestions I had in mind. With Spring on the horizon and COVID-19 no longer preventing events, I suggested cherry blossoms!

Fairmount Park is home to some of the most beautiful cherry blossom trees local to the area. Every year, the park has various areas where cherry blossoms bloom vibrantly. It’s been one of my favorite places for the yearly festival. After years of countless delays, this year marked its grand return, so I knew I wanted to take advantage of the peak blossom season.

We headed to Fairmount and journeyed around the area from the pavilion to the gardens for various portraits. It took a bit of time because who doesn’t get nervous in front of the camera, but eventually, Sabrina found her groove glowing radiantly with confidence towards the tail end. I loved capturing her with the pink blossoms and showing off her wicked tattoos. We had such a good time chatting and enjoying our short time together while she allowed me to create art using her energy and smile.

I love getting these opportunities and taking considerable joy in doing them. I hope more consider hiring me in the future as I venture into more daring artistic measures with these types of sessions and create something different while still allowing people to be themselves. Just like her, I just needed a bit of time to do this a few times and realize I have the potential to have some fun. But for now, there’s nothing wrong with taking advantage of nature’s beautiful Spring season as a backdrop for gorgeous portraits.
